Time to unleash good idea for dogs
Walking the Pennyroyal Arts Council’s 5K run Saturday in downtown Hopkinsville, I got to explore a section of the new rail trail that I had not seen yet. My wildly popular golden retriever, Summer, came along, and we walked with my friend Anne Noel and her golden, Jack, who also has something of a fan following in this town.
People love all kinds of dogs, but they are especially fond of goldens for several obvious reasons. Golden retrievers are friendly, goofy, happy and soft to the touch.
At the end of the run or walk, depending on your interpretation of a 5K excursion Summer and I had our photograph taken with Anne and Jack. I posted it on Facebook, of course, and one person who commented on the photograph said, “We need a dog park in this town! Who’s with me?”

One of the benefits of a dog park is that it gives dogs a chance to run off a leash and burn up some energy. If you live next door to a fenced or chained dog that frequently barks and creates a nuisance, you can see how a dog park might improve the animal’s life. (That’s assuming the person responsible for the dog would go to the trouble to use the park.)
I’ve been walking Summer in the business and residential areas of downtown Hopkinsville for about three and a half years. On some days, I feel like there’s a jackal at every corner. Seriously, some of the dogs are just aching to get their jaws on Summer, and I worry if a fence and a chain will hold them in their yard. A few spots have become off limits when I have my dog with me. We’ve been jumped twice once by a German shepherd on Main Street and once by a pit bull terrier on Canton Street so I’ve earned the right to say the leash law in Hopkinsville often falls short. Many people don’t observe the law. And it appears to be difficult to enforce.
Most dogs are aggressive when they are trying to protect their own place. But put them in a neutral place with a bunch of other dogs, and I think you’d see something very different. The goldens and the jackals would play together.
I also think a dog park would be a highly entertaining and popular place in Hopkinsville. Dogs are great fun, and watching them is therapeutic for people. We’ll need several benches.
