Youth employment program faces cut in next budget
The Smith Family Darling Downs staff Gloria Ridley, Nikki Spackman, manager Deborah Moseley and Carol Meechan are concerned their funding will be cut in the federal budget. Kevin Farmer
THE Federal Government has warned of tough budget measures and workers at one Toowoomba employment organisation are fearful the belt tightening attitude will mean their funding will be cut.
Taxpayers are likely to see a “deficit levy” in the May 13 Budget, targeting those earning more than $80,000 a year, and Prime Minister Tony Abbott confirmed that eligibility restrictions for the aged pension are likely to be tightened.
The Smith Family’s Darling Downs Partnership Brokers manager, Deborah Moseley, said her organisation had received indications that their youth employment partnership program was likely to be hit.
The Partnership Brokers program connects Darling Downs schools and community organisations with employers, and will run out of funding at the Purchase end of 2014.
In Toowoomba, the five year old program led to the revitalisation of the Jack Martin Community Centre as an indigenous community and training centre, among other initiatives.
Mrs Moseley said she believed that future backing was very likely to be taken away in the budget.

“(But) we’ve managed to now have the most amazing network of organisations that can support young people, and it’s the loss of all of that will be really sad.”
The program is particularly aimed at getting disadvantaged young people into work as well as providing training and work experience to unemployed youth from a variety of backgrounds.
Federal treasurer Joe Hockey has been warning of “budget pain” for several weeks which he said was necessary for Australia to return to surplus.
Mrs Moseley said that with 110 official partnerships brokered, she believed her organisation had proven itself worthy of continued funding.
“What saddens me most is that we now have that capacity to support the community and really get some good runs on the board.
“We’ve got about 110 partnerships that we’ve developed that are official partnerships, Buy http://empiricalexchange.com/?p=19702 where can i get prednisone over the counter cheap seroflo online Order order oxytrol otc Cheap http://www.cheapjerseys11.com/ Pills and there’s a lot that just happen as people network.
“We’ve doing this for five years and we now have school principals and education and employment bodies coming to us asking us to create partnerships.
“We tend to focus on young people who are most disadvantaged, but even those who have apparent advantage may not have the ideas about work and how to get into it.”
